Petra Kvitova Of Czec Republic Reached Her First Wimbledon Final

Big-hitting Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic reached her first Wimbledon final on Thursday when she defeated Belarusian fourth seed Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in a rollercoaster semi-final.   The 21-year-old, who is the first Czech since Jana Novotna in 1998 to make the title match, will tackle either 2004 champion Maria Sharapova or German wildcard Sabine Lisicki in Saturday's final.
She is also the first left-hander to make the final at the All England Club since her childhood inspiration Martina Navratilova, watching from the Royal Box on Centre Court, in 1990.   Kvitova, with her right thigh tightly-strapped, raced through the first set in just 27 minutes, breaking in the fourth and sixth games, racking up 13 winners and firing six howitzer aces past a hapless Azarenka.
But the fired-up fourth-seeded Belarusian, playing in her first Grand Slam semi-final, stopped her opponent's run of five successive games with a break in the second game of the second set helping her into a 3-0 lead. Kvitova, who had never won a match on grass before her run to the semi-finals last year, had to save two break points at 1-4 as the match threatened to run away from her.
Azarenka was in the ascendancy, however, and the Belarusian levelled the tie in the ninth game on a third set point when Kvitova went long with a forehand.   Kvitova, who had defeated Azarenka in the third round here last year, then shook off the shackles at the start of the third set and jumped out to a 3-1 with a break in the second game.
She fought off two break points in the fourth game, which she secured with her ninth ace of the tie and wrapped up the match when Azarenka popped up a limp second double fault in the eighth game.

Drones Will Operate From Afghanistan To Attack AlQaeda In Pakistan

The US has opted to shift its drone bases of operation from Pakistan to Afghanistan, sources told Arab News.  According to the Arab News sources, the decision by the US came as domestic pressure in Pakistan gained momentum against presence of the bases in the country.
Defense Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar's remarks on Wednesday that the US had been asked to vacate Shamsi Air Base.
According to the sources, the CIA, which has been using Shamsi Air Base in Pakistan since 2004, had to develop other sources, largely based in Afghanistan, to carry out its drone operations targeting al Qaeda and its affiliates.

Beetroot Juice Can Boost Up Stamina In Athletes

Beetroot juice could keep athletes at the top of their game by boosting stamina. The brightly-coloured juice gives cyclists such a boost that they can shave vital seconds off their time, Exeter University research shows.
The benefits of beetroot juice don’t end there, with previous studies from the university crediting it with increasing stamina.   Lowering blood pressure, warding off dementia, and even giving pensioners the extra energy they need to make a trip to the shops, could all also be in its power.
While the list of benefits may seem remarkable, scientists say the can be explained by the abundance of nitrite in the vegetable. Once inside the body the chemical gets to work widening the blood vessels, speeding oxygen flow to the muscles, including the brain and allowing them make the most of the oxygen breathed in.
In the latest study, the Exeter team asked nine men who cycle competitively to compete in time trials over 2.5 miles and 10 miles. Before setting off, they drank just under a pint of beetroot juice.
They repeated the two routes on a different day, but this time fueled by beetroot juice missing its nitrite. When the cyclists drank the nitrite-rich, ordinary beetroot juice they were 11 seconds quicker over the shorter distance and 45 seconds quicker over the longer route.
While this may not sound like much, the top two riders in last year’s Tour de France were separated by just 39 seconds.

Lung Cancer Deaths Reduced By CT Scan--A US Study

Current or former heavy smokers screened with low-dose CT scans experienced a 20 percent reduction in lung cancer deaths compared to those screened using chest X-rays, a US study.   The National Lung Screening Trial, conducted starting in 2002 among 53,454 patients at a high risk of developing lung cancer, is the first to show that screening using low-dose celical computed tomography can reduce lung cancer mortality by identifying tumors early.
Lung cancer is the most lethal form of cancer in the United States, where more than 94 million current or former smokers are at elevated risk of the disease.   Patients have often not learned they had lung cancer until they experience symptoms of the disease, at which time the cancer is likely advanced and has less chances of getting cured.
Scientists compared mortality rates between those current and former heavy smokers between the ages of 55 and 74 who received three annual screenings using low-dose CT scans compared to those receiving chest X-rays for the nearly decade-long study.
Participants had smoked at least a pack a day for a minimum of 30 years, and were current or former smokers without symptoms, signs or history of lung cancer.

Pakistan And India Will Play Full Test Series And One Day Cricket Matches Next Year

Pakistan have been pencilled in to tour India for a full series of Test and one-day cricket matches next year, in what would be a breakthrough in relations that were hit by the deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks.  The International Cricket Council governing body's latest Future Tours Programme shows that the two South Asian rivals could play three Tests and five one-day internationals in March and April 2012.
India is designated as the host of the series, but an ICC spokesman told on Thursday that the list was provisional and indicated that the matches were likely to be played at a neutral venue.  Any series would be organised entirely by both countries' governing bodies, he added.
No one was immediately available for comment at the Board of Control for Cricket in India.  India severed cricketing links with its neighbour after the Mumbai attacks, which killed 166 people and which New Delhi blamed on outlawed Islamist militants based across the border in Pakistan.
No major international cricket side has toured Pakistan since gunmen attacked the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in March 2009, killing eight people and injuring seven others.  Pakistan now plays "home" games in the United Arab Emirates, England and New Zealand.
India last played Pakistan in this year's World Cup semi-final at Mohali, beating them in a keenly-watched encounter attended by the two countries' prime ministers Manmohan Singh and Yousuf Raza Gilani.  Afterwards there were calls by players and politicians for the resumption of cricketing links, as millions of fans were missing out due to the nuclear-armed neighbors' strained political ties.
India's foreign secretary, Nirupama Rao, even said that the country was ready to send its team to Pakistan, if provided full security.  The Pakistan Cricket Board welcomed Rao's statement and said it was exploring options for playing a series at a neutral venue.
The last time Pakistan played a Test match in India was in the southern city of Bangalore in December 2007. India won the series 1-0.
Apart from the World Cup semi-final, their the last one-day international on Indian soil was in November 2007 in Jaipur. Pakistan won the match but lost that series 3-2.
